September 15: International Day of Democracy

September 15, as the International Day of Democracy, reminds us of the importance of democratic values. Although often seen as a simple political system, democracy is in fact much more complex and essential. With roots stretching back to antiquity, it has played a crucial role in shaping societies based on values such as pluralism, freedom, justice, and equality. Democratic societies must be characterized by active citizen participation, respect for human rights, and adherence to the rule of law. At the same time, ensuring freedom of speech, transparency, and accountability of institutions is vital, as these elements strengthen people’s trust in the democratic system.

Today, we observe a complex process of both progress and setbacks in many countries, in Europe and globally. Totalitarian and authoritarian regimes, with policies that restrict human rights, oppress minorities, and sustain corruption, seem to be gaining ground once again. The ongoing “struggle” between democratic values and progress on one side, and authoritarianism and obscurantism on the other, entrusts us with the responsibility to remain active and staunch defenders of democratic values. Meanwhile, cooperation between institutions and civil society organizations can yield positive outcomes in adapting democratic institutions to modern challenges, creating conditions that promote equality, justice, and social cohesion.

In this context, civil society organizations like DEMOTRUST can and must play a key role in spreading and defending values such as pluralism, inclusion, transparency, and accountability. The goal of these organizations cannot be anything other than the improvement and deepening of democratic institutions. These goals can be achieved through actions focusing on raising social awareness, promoting reforms with a social impact both at the national and local levels, and enhancing active citizen participation.

Today is yet another opportunity to reflect on the importance of democracy and to realize the need to protect its values. September 15 highlights the necessity of collaboration to create a fair, democratic, and participatory society for all.
